South African Rob Murray new artistic director Amsterdam Fringe Festival
The artistic and general management of the Amsterdam Fringe Festival will be taken over by Rob Murray from November 15th. He’s succeeding artistic director Anneke Jansen who leaves the Fringe January 1st.
With almost 20 years of experience in South Africa, Murray has an established national and growing international profile. He has worked as an artistic director, theatre maker and educator – mostly in a very independent and often maverick circumstances.
Jeffrey Meulman, general director Dutch Theatre Festival and Amsterdam Fringe Festival: “Rob Murray is not only someone with a vision, but also a creator with a strong background in production, tech and research that understands what is needed to make this festival thrive and continue its tradition of innovation. The political background of his home country is complicated and is in a constant search for new common grounds. His perspective and knowledge can be of great value to the changing European society.”
Murray is looking forward to working at an eclectic platform that aims to foster its participants to shine.
Rob Murray: “I have known of the Amsterdam Fringe since meeting Anneke in 2011, and the festival quickly became a dream to achieve, a goal. Being invited there in 2014 and 2015 only pushed that goal even further, as the experience of the city, and the experience of the festival and meeting the whole team and fellow Dutch artists, exceeded anything I had dreamed of prior to that. This is singularly an amazing and life-changing opportunity, and I am pouring all my South African hardworking ethic and belief in dreaming into it, that collectively it will continue to surprise and amaze everyone involved with it, from Amsterdam, from the Netherlands, from South Africa, from the world.”
Murray currently speaks English, Afrikaans and South African sign language. He’s working on Dutch.
The Amsterdam Fringe Festival runs from September 1-11 2016. Open applications start on the 1st of February 2016 and close on 1st of March 2016.
