Every year Amsterdam Fringe Festival has room for four talents to join the Fringe Academy. Together this group is responsible for the entire organization of the busy Fringe stage at the Uitmarkt in late August: the Vrije Uitloop. This job includes all sorts of tasks, such as programming, organizing, budgeting, and PR. Every Fringe Academy participant follows an in-house crash course in festival organization, which they then immediately put into practice at the Uitmarkt, the opening of the Dutch cultural season.
Meet the Fringe Academy 2018…
Hi, I’m Doris! After my bachelors in Theatre Studies at the University of Amsterdam, I did an internship at the International Theatre School Festival and Orkater, after which I started my own little one-woman business in PR for theater and festivals. I worked for the Parade, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, the Flamenco Biennial and theatre company De Hollanders. Despite the flying start, I began missing studying (for real), and started my masters programme Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy in Utrecht. The Fringe Academy is part of my MA programme, as an internship. It’s so awesome to be able to create our own Vrije Uitloop as part of the Fringe family!
Hey I’m Hannah. I’m from the UK, but I’ve been living in Amsterdam for almost four years now. I studied art history and cultural studies at Amsterdam University College, where I discovered that curating—in the broadest sense of the term—is my thing. I’m now working 24/7 on turning this passion into a career… Since graduating I’ve interned for Framer Framed and the Prince Claus Fund, both of which were focused on exhibiting the visual arts. I’m super excited to be ¼ of the 2018 Fringe Academy, particularly because festivals, theatre, and performing arts are all new terrain for me. Ik heb voorpret!
I’m Rianne. The unconventional, edginess, silliness and unpredictability is what I like to keep busy with. Preferably as all-round as possible. I first studied Cultural Heritage at the Reinwardt Academy, followed by the MA programme Arts and Society at Utrecht University. Here I learned that curating, programming and organizing are my biggest passions. And if possible, I do this in as many different environments as possible. From museum to theater, from depot to backstage, from black box to white cube: I like it all. Oh, and my favorite animal is a parakeet so that comes in handy at the Fringe Festival. Looking forward!
Hi Terry here, I study Cultural and Social Development. During my study I had the opportunity to work in the theatre field and the festival field, but never really combined. I joined the Fringe Academy because it gives me the opportunity to work for an exciting and out-of-the-box organisation. We basically organise the entire Vrije Uitloop from A to Z, how cool?
