- performative installation
between “the stateless i” and “you”
there is a history
and a border
2048 is a performative installation that takes the spectator into the world of stateless. its freedoms and limitations. through it, it tries to question the value of identity, maps, and borders in achieving belonging.
it takes no-mans land as a space to start from.
2048 is part of ala minawi’s artistic research that started in 2016 about belonging and its relationship to physical spaces. the research is an ongoing project for alaa that represents a certain aspect of the subject and then makes a presentation about what it has reached.
between 2016 and 2018 alaa focused on the existential and philosophical aspect of belonging that was presented in the form of an inquisitive installation.
first presentation of 2048 – the philosophical / metaphysical (June 2018)
in 2019, alaa focused his research on the political aspect of belonging, trying to find connections between it and identity, nationalism, and globalization. he took maps and borders as references and found no-man’s land a logical space that is charged with conflicts and tension to almost the point of neutrality. he also takes the case of the stateless as a witness to the failure of the current system to be inclusive thus its inability to achieve the longed for belonging.
