- Lecture Performance
On March 15th 2017 the Netherlands is heading to the voting booths again for the parliamentary elections. Poet and performance artist Quinsy Gario wanted put himself up for election with his own new party: Poging Andere Polititieke Interventies (translates to Attempting Other Political Interventions)
As many others he deeply disturbed about what could happen in the coming elections. The xenophobic and racist Geert Wilders is ahead in the polls ahead of an election. All of the other parties are trying to overtake him on the right when it comes to refugees, migrants and the legacy of our colonial history. Add to that the racist and extremist developments in the rest of Europe and this election could have disastrous and violent consequences for the socially and economially vulnerable and the marginalized racial and ethnic groups in this country.
But after the perpetual barage of hate towards Gario his loved ones dissuaded him from actually going through with the political project. In his with an Amsterdam Fringe Festival Silver Award awarded performance How Do You Press Charages Against 770 People he already gave the audience a little bit of an idea of what his inbox has looked like the last couple of years because of his visibility in the second anti-racisme wave in the Netherlands. Participation in national politics would only worsen the racist backlash he has to deal with.
In his lecture performance he presents the research he did for his political adventure and together with the audience he comes up with what the political class needs to change today. Together with the participants he looks at the fringes of our political process and looks for another definition of politics, democracy and the role of former colonial subjects, migrants and refugees there in.
Ever performance builds on what the previous group of participants presented. At the end of the 11 days Quinsy will have enough input for a political program for a party that as of now does not yet exist.
