The Karamazovs is about three brothers and their greedy old father. About blood, jealousy and revenge. But also about justice and religion, ethical and existential questions. What does it mean to be a good person? Why is it so hard to live together? How can we endure each other’s presence when we see our own failures reflected in the other? Dostojevski’s writing is sharp as a knife but empathic at the same time. The Karamazovs calls for living life to the fullest, with compassion for ourselves and for others.
Brecht Hermans is a Belgian theatre maker, living in Rotterdam. He works as an actor for Rotterdams Centrum voor Theater and wrote texts for DOX in Utrecht and Filet Puur in Belgium. In his own work he sees theatre as a space for encounters. Cellist Pau Marques i Oleo creates a musical dialogue with the audience. His love for interdisciplinary projects makes him the ideal sparring partner for The Karamazovs. Specially for the Amsterdam Fringe Festival, the text of The Karamazovs will be translated into English.
About Brecht’s play Elektra:
“Brecht Hermans rewrites this beautiful classic into a modern text that zooms in on the family itself and how every one of them starkly believes their own truth. He abandons the verses and securely presses the wound: the situation is unresolvable… And that is the tragedy.” (jury report Landjuweelfestival 2016)
