(Y)OUR EYES ONLY is an immersive urban dance theater show about Amsterdam Zuidoost. The dancers grew up and live in the bustling district. Zuidoost includes special stories about growing up in the Netherlands, the struggle to achieve your personal goal still feels like an impossible task for many because of various factors. The performance premiered in June 2018 in the council chamber of Amsterdam Zuidoost.
The performance tells the reality of a group of individual men, with their own dreams, goals, competences and talents who try to profile themselves within the structured society, in which prejudices and inequality unfortunately still belong to the daily social problems. By the distorted images in the media and society makes it more difficult for these young men to live an equal life. During their education they learned in a certain way, but reality often shows a totally different side of life. They must search for their own truths, and try to face their own blockades, to eventually follow their own dreams. Do they achieve their goals, or are they at the mercy of what society expects of them?
During the Fringe festival (Y)our Eyes Only will be played at the children’s department of the central library of Amsterdam (OBA).
The choreographer deliberately chose this exceptional location to represent the metaphorical aspect of society. The racks symbolize structure and box-thinking. In a unique way, the audience is confronted with stereotypical behaviour. Visitors are part of the performance and are forced to be on stage, confrontations with your own way of thinking about yourself in society. And an inspiration how one can change his behaviour and thought to a more positive self-image and the pursuit of own dreams.
