cage-free

Are we living in an illusion of freedom?

GARİP

Location: Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, Rode Zaal

Dates:

duration of the performance: 50 min

It’s just a period. Don’t take it personal. Don’t protest. Keep it up. Perform. Produce. Provide… Proceed.

This is not a vegetarian manifesto, neither is Işıl Bıçakçı (Istanbul, 6/9/1986) advocating the consumption of poultry. Drawing inspiration from the life of a chicken, this humorous maker finds some striking similarities between humanity and its feathered friends and as the performance progresses, she brings various questions to the minds in a light-hearted way.

Biography

Işıl Bıçakçı (1986) born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. After graduating from Computer Sciences and realising coding and programming was not the profession she truly aimed for, her interests started shifting towards the performing arts. She had acting training and then she studied contemporary dance at Mimar Sinan University. She did her internship with Ann Van den Broek in Belgium and after her graduation, she worked with Istanbul State Opera and Ballet MDTIstanbul as performer and choreographer.

Her curiosity about the physical and mental limits of a human being made her continue to expand her abilities. After assisting Ziya Azazi with his whirling workshops at Impulstanz, Işıl started guiding whirling worldwide. As she moved to Belgium, she founded her performance projects company, Garip. To this day she continues her career as a freelance instructor, coach, performer and choreographer.

She’s on eternal research of finding different ways to bring heavy/dark subjects/topics of the world in a light/humorous way, always focused on solutions without being drawn in the problems, puts herself 100% in whatever she does yet doesn’t seek perfection. In peace with the fact that failure is/can be a part of the process.
