GENERAL INFORMATION

  • From 5 – 15 September Amsterdam Fringe Festival will be presenting theatre and dance by talented new, undiscovered and untamed makers at more than 30 venues across Amsterdam. We present a varied program featuring artists from a wide range of backgrounds, origins and futures. The festival is an ode to the madness of the stage and to independence of spirit and it is a plea for artistic freedom. A big, fat, heartfelt embrace of experimentation in the true sense of the word: one whose outcome is able to effect a real surprise.
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival has an open application procedure. Artists can apply with (a plan for) a performance via the online application form. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spots in the program, a selection will be made. Circa 65-75 productions can partake in the program of Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2019.
  • A performance/production does not have to be finished or created yet at the moment of application. Premieres during the festival are encouraged.
  • The artistic team of the festival selects which productions will partake in the festival.
  • Applications will be judged (first) on professional quality of the application and the feasibility of the proposed production within the (practical) conditions of Amsterdam Fringe.
  • The festival organization strives to present a programme in which both the Dutch, Flemish and international performance industry is represented. Preferably it reflects the diversity in the fringes of the (established) theatre field, as well as trends, hot topics and themes within the applications. Preference is given to artists or companies that are not structurally subsidized.
  • Together with Nederlands Theater Festival, Amsterdam Fringe is part of Stichting De Theaterdagen
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival is part of the World Fringe network and the World Fringe Alliance: an informal, international network of Fringe festivals, a.o. Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton Fringe, Prague Fringe, National Arts Festival Grahamstown and Adelaide Fringe.

FORMAL CRITERIA

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival is open to applications from the performing arts (and cross overs) in the broadest sense. In exception to this rule, music concerts and stand-up comedy acts are not eligible to apply for the festival, unless the artist can show the ‘cross over’ or theatrical character of the performance sufficiently.
  • The duration of the performance is 60 minutes max.
  • The performance needs to be of a professional standard.
  • The performance should be able to be produced and/or presented within the practical conditions of Amsterdam Fringe. This means that the performance:
    • can be performed in smaller theatre venues (capacity of max. 100 persons) and/or non theatrical spaces;
    • does not have too complicated technical requirements;
    • does not require a lot of storage space in between shows;
    • has a short build up time and turnaround time (30 minutes) between shows.
  • The production will not be shown in July/August 2019 in or around Amsterdam.
  • The artist is able to perform the production at at least on four days during the festival period of 5  – 15 September 2019.
  • Originality of the artwork or an experimental nature with regard to thematics, artistic form or venue is encouraged and is viewed of as ‘bonus points’.

FINANCIAL

Participation fee

  • Applying for Amsterdam Fringe Festival is free.
  • When the performance is selected for Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2019 you will officially become a participant in the festival. For participation in the festival, a participation fee of € 150,- (excl. VAT) is required.
  • The participation fee secures you of a spot in the festival program and a venue for the performance, a space on the website and in the program brochure and access to the How2Fringe workshops and weekly consultation hours.
  • The participation fee must be paid by 15 April 2019. From that date onward it is assumed that your performance will definitely be part of the program of Amsterdam Fringe 2019 and it is no longer possible to cancel free of charge (i.e. with a refund of the participation fee).
  • If after 25 July 2019 the show is canceled without serious reasons (such as force majeure), a fine of € 75 will be charged because of (extra) costs incurred by Fringe.
  • If there are any problems in the run-up to Fringe that make you think you have to cancel your performance, please contact us as soon as possible so we can look for a solution together.

Revenue / ticketsales

  • Participation in Amsterdam Fringe is at your own risk. The income you’ll receive will be solely from ticket sales, based on a percentage deal.
  • The festival is responsible for the levy of 9% VAT on tickets sold. The remaining amount is divided between the artist, the venue and the festival, divided at an 70/20/10 split (depending on the specific location).
  • The festival organization does not provide fees, travel expenses, accommodation, meals, technical or productional support. We can advise you on how to find the most affordable options for support and on the acquirement of (additional) funds.
  • The ticket prices are determined by Amsterdam Fringe Festival and will be primarily based on the duration of the performance. For every performance there is a fixed entrance fee (between € 7,50 and € 12,50), a passe-partout fee (based on actual numbers) and a fixed discounted price (for holders of discount cards such as CJP). Besides that, Amsterdam Fringe provides special promotions for partner organizations like We Are Public and Stadspas. When your production is part of these promotions, conditions and discounts will be discussed beforehand.
  • Amsterdam Fringe provides 4 complimentary ‘company tickets’ to the artist, distributed over all performance dates. You’ll receive no ticket sales income from these tickets.
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival can provide up to maximum 10 complimentary tickets (for all shows together) to arts industry professionals and press. When there are more than 10 requests from professionals to see the show, the artist will have to approve to accommodate the additional requests. Complimentary tickets do not generate any income from ticket sales.

Payment of ticket sales

  • After the festival the contact person will receive the list of receipts mentioning the part of the box office income you are entitled to, according to the contract. That’s the amount for which you can send us an invoice or be remunerated. All payments are done AFTER the festival.
  • To pay you we need the following:
    • If you are registered as Dutch citizen/ resident
      • In the case of a foundation(stichting): payment occurs after receiving an invoice and a declaration of deduction of the foundation
      • In the case of an independent artist(zzp’er): payment occurs after receiving an invoice. On the invoice the following has to be mentioned in Dutch:
        • ‘de Artiest/het Gezelschap kiest er voor géén gebruik te maken van de artiestenregeling, dus om géén loonheffingen te laten afdragen en niet verzekerd te zijn voor de werknemersverzekeringen (“opting out”). Door deze keuze, mag de opdrachtgever de recette voor het optreden bruto aan de Artiest/het Gezelschap betalen.’
        • (Meaning:The artists choose not to take part in the so called “artiestenregeling” and therefore Amsterdam Fringe Festival does not haven to withdraw Dutch taxes and other employee contributions from the revenues.)
      • In case you are neither of a foundation or registered as self-employed: after receiving contract from a remuneration company
    • For all other nationalities
      • Officially you are allowed to work in The Netherlands up to ONE MONTH without having to pay taxes and social security to the Dutch tax services. Tax payments are your responsibility.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU?

DIY-mentality and professional attitude

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival expects all participants to be able to independently realize the submitted plans financially, productionally and artistically.
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival presents the performance in the program, but does not produce it. The artist is responsible for the production of the performance. Amsterdam Fringe offers support via mediation of a (free) venue, and coaching via the How2Fringe workshops and ‘open office hours’.
  • You are responsible for the technical build-up and technical support during the show (i.e. bringing a technician).
  • Most locations do offer basic technical support and some help with setting up the performance. However, please note that you need to make the exact arrangements with the venue yourself as well as arranging a technician or stage manager to run your show. Please keep in mind that special (technical) requirements – for example a projector or a piano – may involve extra costs (at your own expense).
  • Amsterdam Fringe will try to take your wishes for technical requirements into account as much as possible when selecting a performance venue, but we cannot guarantee all wishes will be met. It’s possible that a venue will charge you for extra technical requirements.

Marketing

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival expects participants to deliver their publicity materials (text, image and webpage) to us on time. Also participants are responsible for good marketing of their performance and raising publicity, via (for example) social media, flyers and posters.
  • We expect participants to meet the deadline for sending in promotional materials (31 May 2019, mark this date!), in order to enable us to promote you show within the festival.

Partaking in the How2Fringe workshops

  • Participants of Amsterdam Fringe Festival are expected to partake in 4 out of 6 How2Fringe workshops, of which the first, taking place on March 18th, is mandatory. You don’t have to be present with thew whole crew, but if you’d like to you’re welcome to!
  • The How2Fringe workshops are especially created for artists of the festival to help make your participation in the festival as successful as possible. The workshops revolve around topics like marketing and publicity, finances and fundraising, networking and getting to know the Dutch performing arts field.
  • The How2Fringe workshops take place in Amsterdam on the following days:
    • Monday 18 March 2019, 3 – 6 PM, How2Fringe #1: FRINGE BASICS (mandatory)

  • Productions that feature in the festival need to follow the safety rules and regulation of the Dutch theatre branche. The festival organization is not liable for accidents and damage or loss of property of any groups or venues.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM US?

Festivalcontext

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival provides a vibrant festival context. In 2019 Vlaams Cultuurhuis De Brakke Grond will again be the Fringe Festival Centre where artists, professionals, crew, volunteers and audiences can gather.

Program schedule

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival takes care of and is responsible for creating and deciding on venues, number of shows per productions, dates and times. This will happen a.o. in conversation with the artists and venues.

Venues

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival arranges venues for all participants. We try to take the preferences and technical requirements mentioned in the application form into account as much as we can.
  • Participants of Amsterdam Fringe do not need to pay rent to their performance venues. (Additional) technical means or support could involve extra costs; these possibilities and terms should be discussed and agreed upon by the artist and the venue.
  • Participants can also ‘bring’ their own venue. Financial agreements with these venues may differ from the usual agreements within Amsterdam Fringe.
  • The venue you perform at will have its own house rules, be a good guest! Make agreements regarding the construction and dismantling of your show, use of technology, parking and other facilities. Keep in mind that you can be placed in one venue with several groups, which means that technical facilities can be limited.
  • Flammable decors must be treated with fire retardants due to safety for the public and the strict control of the fire brigade. The use of open fire and fireworks during the performance is not permitted. Smoking is not permitted either. If you choose a non-theatrical location or venue, you may have to apply for a permit.
  • No more tickets may be sold than the permitted capacity of the venue (Fringe takes care of this), for safety reasons. Emergency exits and walkways must be free of obstacles at all times, please consult the technicians of the venue to discuss these things.

Ticket Sales

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival is responsible for the ticket sales via the website and at the performance venues (door sales).
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival takes care of the payment of the revenues of the ticket sales to the artists and venues.

Support and coaching

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival offers support, coaching and advice on producing and promoting your performance via the How2Fringe workshops, intakes, consultation hours, and has one main contact person within the festival organisation for you. Besides that, regular updates will be sent by e-mail. Please read those carefully.

Marketing & publicity

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival takes care of the promotion of the festival as a whole, via posters and flags in the city, a program brochure, website, social media, guerilla marketing and free publicity in the media.

Connection to the arts industry

  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival promotes the festival and its performances to national and international arts industry professionals. We actively invite them to visit the festival via our Arts Industry Office.
  • Amsterdam Fringe organizes several netwerk events for participants of Amsterdam Fringe and professionals. The How2Fringe workshops feature guest speakers from the industry too.
  • The festival appoints a (international) jury of curators and scouts who’ll select the winners of the Amsterdam Fringe Awards. These (dutch based) award winners will tour with us as part of a Best of Fringe Program in early 2020.
  • The (international) jury will also select the winner of the International Bursary, a grant of 3.000 euros that can be used to perform the winning performance at an international Fringe festival.
