An experimental music theatre performance about diamond painting, grief and fear of intimacy.
Charlene Sancho
Modi is an experimental music theatre performance about Victoria, a woman with a strong need for control and an obsession with diamond painting. Piece by piece, she tries to gain control over a world that feels increasingly difficult to understand. Charlene Sancho created this performance based on her own experience with schema therapy, a form of psychotherapy that explores different modes, or inner voices, in order to gain insight into thoughts, emotions, and behavioural patterns. Each scene represents a different mode and gives shape to Victoria’s inner world, where protectors, fears, and her inner child constantly struggle to take control.
As grief, loneliness, and the fear of connection draw closer, Victoria seeks safety in control and repetition. Through Sancho’s self-produced electronic music, urban influences, and a blend of humour and discomfort, Modi explores the strange ways in which people protect themselves. An experimental performance where alienation and recognition exist side by side.
Charlene Sancho, grew up in Leiden and graduated from the Amsterdam Academy of Theatre and Dance in 2018. Since then, she has worked as an actress in television and theatre productions and as a voice actor for audiobooks. Over the past years, she has built a versatile career across television and theatre, with roles including the TV series The Golden Hour (Netflix) and performances in various youth theatre and theatre productions, including Beest, Lennox and several other productions.
After years of mainly working as a performer, Charlene developed a strong desire to create from her own artistic language. Her work explores the tension between vulnerability, absurdity and human behavioural patterns. Combining personal fascinations with humour, she looks for ways to approach heavier themes through strange, playful and recognisable situations.
With Modi, she takes her first step as an independent maker. Using schema therapy as a starting point, each scene is built around a different mode and supported by self-produced electronic music.
