A woman alone on the street in the dark. She would provoke danger herself. Especially if she dresses a certain way. How does that danger feel? What happens when horror enters public space?  

Based on a deep frustration about how women are portrayed, director Marieke Reijnen makes a radical gesture. PICK ME UP celebrates the raw powers of horror. By means of a physical transformation, existing ideas about ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ are deconstructed. A carnal transformation where all conventions are pulled inside out.  

Inspired by films such as Titane (Julia Ducourneau) and ideas by feminist thinkers such as Julia Kristeva and Judith Butler, Marieke is looking for ways to combine critical theory with body horror. In previous performances like Het Gras Brandt Roze (2022) and Mond in Brand (2021), Marieke showed that she has a strong visual style, creating work that gets under the skin.
