10… 9… Imagine: you could travel to space for one single time. 8… 7… And then imagine, your deceased father would be there as well. 6… 5… What would you see? 4… 3… What would you feel? 2… And what would you say? 1… 0… ignition… lift-off…  

Imagine that after we die, we continue to live ‘among the stars’. In The Impossible Astronaut, Astrid Klein Haneveld takes her audience on a journey through outer space, full of grief and science fiction, in search of her deceased father.  

This theatrical solo dance performance blends the imagination of the iconic science fiction films of Star Wars and the Doctor Who series, with Astrid’s childhood memories and personal stories. With The Impossible Astronaut, Astrid aims to create recognition, acknowledgement and connection for grieving young adults and those who have lost a parent at a young age, just like she did herself. 

Biography

Astrid Rozemarijn Klein Haneveld (1997, The Netherlands) is a dancer/dance maker and dramaturge. Her work focuses on the physical translation of emotion, memory and personal experience. Astrid starts her performances from an autobiographical perspective, aiming to make these stories tangible and felt by the audience. The Impossible Astronaut is her debut as a solo maker, in which she shares her personal experience of grief, following the loss of her father when she was eight years old.  

Astrid graduated from the Dance Theatre and Modern department of Fontys University for Fine and Performing Arts in 2019 and obtained her Master of Arts in Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy from Utrecht University in 2022. She worked as a dancer in projects by Sita Ostheimer, Justin de Jager, and Guilherme Miotto, among others. In 2024, she created and performed in the performance PUINHOOP at the Café Theatre Festival and developed The Impossible Astronaut as Maker in House at Productiehuis Nowhere in Amsterdam. Next to her activities on stage, Astrid is active in the theatre landscape as a programmer, engages in social safety, feminism and activism, and contributes to the future of the sector as a board member at Ensemble Nieuwe Theaterwerkers.
